The air in Independence, Iowa, is buzzing with excitement. The Buchanan County Fair is happening right now (July 14–21), bringing together carnival thrills, livestock showcases, grandstand spectacles, and unforgettable small-town charm.

What’s Happening This Week

  • Carnival Rides & Ground Shows – From the Wild World of Animals to mechanical bull rides and Junior Fun Day events, there’s nonstop activity from noon to evening.

  • Livestock & 4‑H/FFA Exhibits – Youth from all over the county are proudly showing their poultry, beef, dairy, and sheep. Exhibits are judged and auctioned throughout the week.

  • Grandstand Entertainment – Monster trucks, demolition derby, and live music headline the week. Friday night brings country music star Randy Houser with Dillon Carmichael, and Saturday caps off with the demo derby and fireworks.

  • Specialty Events – Pie contests, dog agility, goat shows, and more fill the schedule with down-home fun.

A Global Perspective in Iowa

In a groundbreaking moment for the fair, Jensen 365 sat down for an exclusive interview with Rev. FR. Dr. Hyacinth Lormem Alia, Executive Governor of Benue State, Nigeria. Governor Alia came to Buchanan County to learn how American farmers—especially those in rural communities—are tackling the challenges of agriculture.

He spoke about the urgent need for better farming practices in Nigeria and how his visit to Buchanan County is a vital first step.

“Seeing Buchanan County’s sustainable farming, youth programs, and cooperative spirit inspires us,” he said.
“We’re here to learn—from the land, from the people, and from the success stories we can bring home.”

Governor Alia’s visit signals a remarkable opportunity for collaboration—planting the seeds for agricultural reform in West Africa, starting in Iowa’s corn-fed heartland.
